Argentine Senator Backs Trade Deal with EU

National Senator for UCR, Maximiliano Abad, backed the bill that ratifies the trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union by highlighting that this 'strategic interregional partnership is a window of opportunity' for the country, but warned that the agreement 'guarantees to compete' but not necessarily 'to win'. 'This agreement guarantees us the ability to compete. It was a strategic decision,' he said. The lawmaker emphasized that the opening of new markets represents a concrete opportunity for the productive sectors of Buenos Aires province: 'Sectors that work with clear and predictable rules will grow. The province of Buenos Aires has the productive and export potential to take advantage of this new stage.' During his speech, Abad framed the agreement in a historical perspective: 'Thirty years after the IguazĂș Declaration, we are on the verge of ratifying the most important agreement in the history of Mercosur. More than a treaty, today we are validating a course for the coming decades: a course of smart integration and productive ambition that can generate more opportunities for all Argentines,' he concluded. 'What will not guarantee Argentina is to win, that is why we must deepen this path,' asserted the Buenos Aires radical, according to the Argentine News Agency (NA). 'Beyond the commercial benefits, we are ratifying an alliance between democratic blocs that share rules, standards, and values. That first understanding between Argentina and Brazil was not only economic.'
